I played 6 seasons of professional football in the Canadian Football League, and every year of my playing career was a challenge. Every season I had to prove myself all over again. And this challenge of proving myself had to be done every day. It was a challenge that I embraced and loved, and it made me better.

But the path to betterment, to achieving my goals, took a long time. And there were failures along the way. To keep from being discouraged by failure or from how far away I was from achieving my goals, I found it helpful to break down my goals into smaller, more manageable pieces. Instead of focusing on a few big goals all year, I focused on making progress towards sub-goals; I focused on strategies and tactics that would help me achieve my goals.

I had a coach who would say to the team every day during the morning meeting, "Let's get 2% better today." That concept of small, consistent improvements helped me to not be discouraged by the pace of progress, which is often slower than we'd like. It helped me to focus on the process of improvement, rather than the end result. And overall, it helped me to achieve my goals.

I want everyone to experience the happiness and fulfillment that comes from working towards and achieving their goals. That's why I created 2% Better.

How it works

Create a goal, and ask yourself what strategies will allow you to achieve that goal. Then ask yourself what tactics will allow you achieve those strategies. Keep each step as simple as possible, and be open to adapting the plan as you go, changing, adding, or removing your strategies and tactics as needed in order to achieve your goal.

You may find the act of structuring your goals, strategies, and tactics leads to a better understanding of the work involved with achieving your goals, and often the final structure may look a lot different than the first draft.

Trust the process

Improvement is a process. It takes time and patience. Rather than focusing on how far you have to go, focus on taking just a couple steps down the path each day. 2% better every day is a realistic, sustainable goal that will lead to significant improvement over time. Trust the process, work consistently, and you will see results.
